This week a bunch of good news coming for Pakistan from the sports domain. Mainly from cricket but we have a piece of good news from the Squash game too. More on this will be shared in the coming articles.
Babar Azam is the only player in the world to break the 2000 runs record in a calendar year in different cricket formats. He bags Garfield Sobers Trophy for Men’s as well as Men’s One Day International (ODI) player of the year. Some of the other winners from Pakistan Men’s cricket are Muhammad Rizwan and Harris Rauf for the International Cricket Council (ICC) Men’s T20 team of the year 2022 and from Pakistan Women’s cricket is Nida Dar for ICC Women’s T20 of the year 2022.
Winning the Garfield Sobers award is really a significant achievement for any cricketer, especially when it comes to Pakistani players. See below the reaction of Babar Azam for winning this award, shared on the Pakistan Cricket Board’s (PCB) official Twitter account.
Today, the International Cricket Council (ICC) released the complete list of winners honored in each of the 2022 ICC Awards categories. The famous Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy for ICC Men’s Cricketer of the Year and the highly sought-after Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy for ICC Women’s Cricketer of the Year were two of the categories that were made public on the ICC’s digital media.
The legendary Babar Azam of Pakistan was named the recipient of the Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy and the Men’s ODI Cricketer of the Year award. The ICC Voting Academy, an impartial panel of well-known media representatives, along with votes cast by cricket fans who registered on icc-cricket.com, held a global poll to determine the winners.

The 13 distinct categories’ winners were chosen based on their cumulative efforts and accomplishments for the entire year. By earning the Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy, Babar emulates the accomplishment of his colleague Shaheen Shah Afridi, who won the award in 2021 and becomes Pakistan’s second winner in a row. Babar broke numerous other records in 2022, not the least of which was being the first—and still only—player to receive the ICC Men’s Player of the Month award twice.
Let’s have a look at Babar Azam’s cricket year 2022. He played 44 matches and scored 2598 runs with an average of 54.12 making 8 centuries and 17 half-centuries. These stats are incredible for any cricket lover. Definitely, Babar Azam deserves a standing ovation for his incredible performance. We wish him good luck for the next calendar year 2023 to achieve some new milestones.
