A Sherbaz Marri gold medal topped a memorable campaign for Pakistan at the Nomad MMA Championship in Kazakhstan, where the national contingent won seven medals, four gold and three bronze, to finish second overall in the team standings.

Marri, a mixed martial arts fighter from Balochistan, delivered the standout result of the championship for Pakistan. After his victory, he thanked the people of Pakistan and the Government of Balochistan for their support and encouragement, saying their backing had stood behind his training and his journey to the championship, according to reports published on 26 October.

Seven medals and a Sherbaz Marri gold medal for Pakistan

Pakistan’s seven medal haul was built across the whole team rather than on one fighter alone. The four gold medals accounted for more than half of the total, alongside three bronze medals, and the combined effort lifted Pakistan to second place in the overall standings at the international event.

The Sherbaz Marri gold medal was the headline result of the campaign, and it underlined how far the Balochistan fighter has come on the Nomad MMA circuit. INP described his showing as an outstanding performance that earned gold for Pakistan and Balochistan on the international stage. Reports of the championship did not name Pakistan’s other medallists, and full bout by bout results have not yet been published, but the tally itself marks one of the strongest team performances by Pakistani fighters in this discipline.

From bronze in 2024 to gold in Kazakhstan

Kazakhstan is familiar ground for Marri. In October 2024, he told the Kazakh news outlet Tengrinews that he had won a bronze medal at a Nomad MMA event in the country, where he represented a five member Pakistani team travelling with a coach.

Two years later, he has upgraded that bronze to gold. Sports experts quoted in reports of the championship said the performances of Marri and his team mates showed the potential of Pakistan’s young fighters, and that proper training, resources and opportunities could help them achieve even more on the international stage.

What the result means for Pakistani MMA

Nomad MMA is a Kazakh style of mixed martial arts, created in Kazakhstan in 2005 and run by the Nomad MMA federation, which is based in Karaganda. It is a serious circuit: the federation’s 2025 Asian Championship in Astana drew 813 athletes from 16 countries, its calendar also included a World Cup in Karamay, China, in August 2026, and its website lists Pakistan as part of its structure, naming Hussain Zahir as president of Nomad MMA Pakistan and of Nomad MMA Asia.

At home, the Pakistan Mixed Martial Arts Federation has been building the amateur game, and Pakistani fighters have already won gold medals at the IMMAF Asian Championships hosted in Lahore. A second place team finish in Kazakhstan adds international weight to that progress.

It also continues a rewarding run for Pakistani teams in recent weeks, which has brought a silver medal for the military drone team at an international competition in Ankara, a silver for the junior hockey team at the Sultan of Johor Cup and a dominant 27 gold medal showing by WAPDA at the National Athletics Championship in Karachi.

For Marri himself, the Sherbaz Marri gold medal rewards years of work in Balochistan, where athletes often train with far fewer facilities than their rivals. Coverage of the win noted that his achievement has added to Pakistan’s sporting honours and highlighted the talent emerging from the country’s MMA community. His gold, and the six medals won around him by his team mates, offer fresh evidence that Pakistan’s MMA community is producing fighters who can win at international level, and a reason for young athletes back home to believe the same path is open to them.
