Jhang has written a new chapter in Pakistan’s motorsport story. The first-ever Jhang Desert Rally 2026, held alongside a three-day cultural festival from October 16 to 18, 2026, brought off-road racing to the Thal Desert at Rehmat Abad in Tehsil 18-Hazari, with around 100 drivers and riders from across Pakistan taking on a desert track announced at 95 kilometres.
Organised by the District Administration Jhang, the inaugural edition combined competitive racing with traditional sports and folk culture, marking the district’s entry into Pakistan’s desert rally calendar alongside established events like the Cholistan and Thal rallies.
Jhang Desert Rally 2026: A 95 km Track Through the Thal Desert
Deputy Commissioner Jhang Babar Sahib Din announced the event at a press conference in Lahore, saying the rally’s centerpiece would be a 95-kilometre off-road racing track through Jhang’s section of the Thal Desert. Some later reports described the track as 90 kilometres, but the administration’s announced figure was 95 km.
Around 100 experienced drivers and riders were expected to compete, including female jeep drivers, broadening the inaugural field. Renowned racer Nadir Magsi was among the leading competitors expected to take part, according to The News, adding star power to the first edition of the Jhang Desert Rally 2026.
The racing programme included Women’s, Stock and Veterans categories alongside bike racing, giving the event a wider competitive base than a single-class jeep race.
The district administration said the primary objective was to showcase Jhang’s unique identity, desert landscape, culture and traditions at the national and international level, while promoting tourism and strengthening the local economy.
More Than a Race: Tent Pegging, Kabaddi and Folk Nights
The three-day programme was designed as a wider cultural celebration rather than simply an off-road race. Alongside the rally, visitors could watch tent pegging, kabaddi and volleyball, try paragliding, and enjoy horse riding and horse dancing displays.
Evenings brought folk music and a musical night, while food courts and accommodation camps were set up for participants and visitors travelling to the venue. The administration said camping facilities would let tourists stay close to the action in the desert.
Putting Jhang on the Tourism Map
The district administration framed the rally as part of the Punjab government’s wider push to promote regional tourism and preserve local cultural traditions. Jhang includes roughly 6,000 square kilometres of the Thal region and sits at the confluence of the Chenab and Jhelum rivers, giving it a landscape that extends well beyond its agricultural identity.
PakWheels partnered with the district administration as the event’s digital media partner, bringing coverage of the rally and the festival to automotive audiences across Pakistan.
One clarification for rally fans: the Jhang Desert Rally is a separate event from the Thal Desert Rally, whose 11th edition was rescheduled to November 5 to 8, 2026, in the Muzaffargarh and Layyah districts. The Jhang edition is its own inaugural event, held in Jhang district.
Pakistan’s sporting calendar has been a busy one, from the Pakistan Canada hockey series announced for 2027 to the junior hockey team’s thumping win in the Sultan of Johor Cup and the national cricket team’s pink jerseys for breast cancer awareness.
Results Awaited
The three-day event concluded on October 18, 2026. At the time of writing, official race results had not yet been published. The story of the inaugural Jhang Desert Rally 2026 is one of a district stepping onto the national motorsport stage, and this article will be updated when the winners are announced.
