The Pakistan Stock Exchange has set a new benchmark for public participation. The PSX record new investors milestone confirms that 25,281 new investors joined the bourse in September 2026, the highest number of new accounts ever added in a single month. With this influx, the total investor base of the exchange has grown to 656,218, more than double the 321,144 investors recorded in March 2024.
The figures were announced on October 1, 2026, by Adviser to the Finance Minister Khurram Schehzad in a post on his X account. They were also cited by Finance Minister Senator Muhammad Aurangzeb during his visit to the PSX in Karachi the same day, where he said sustainable growth, capital formation and private sector led development were key to the country’s economic progress.
September’s PSX Record New Investors Milestone
September’s tally of 25,281 new investors breaks every previous single-month record at the PSX. The number is especially striking because it arrived during a month when the market itself was under pressure. The benchmark KSE-100 Index opened September near 176,976 points and closed the month at 169,969, shedding 7,006 points or 3.96 percent, its steepest monthly decline since March.
In other words, the sell-off did little to cool the public’s appetite for equities. While prices fell on the back of geopolitical uncertainty and volatile oil prices, thousands of first-time investors decided it was their moment to enter the market. Market watchers say the PSX record new investors figure proves that retail interest is now structural rather than cyclical, since most of the new entrants belong to Gen-Z.
“More investors, broader participation and deeper capital markets.”, Khurram Schehzad, Adviser to the Finance Minister, on the record September inflow
The Numbers Behind the Record
The scale behind the PSX record new investors milestone becomes clearer when placed against the recent past. In March 2024, the PSX investor base stood at just 321,144 accounts. It has now crossed 656,218, more than doubling in less than three years.
The momentum has been building through the fiscal year. According to the Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP), stock market investor accounts grew by 48 percent in FY2025-26, the highest annual growth ever recorded in the country’s capital market, rising from 392,775 on July 1, 2025, to 583,052 on June 30, 2026. About 190,000 new accounts were opened during the year, the largest single year addition on record.
Young investors are leading the charge. The SECP says 45 percent of new investor identification numbers registered in the first half of 2026 belonged to individuals aged 18 to 30, with those aged 31 to 45 contributing another 41 percent. Geographically, Karachi accounted for 25 percent of new accounts, followed by Lahore at 16 percent, Islamabad and Rawalpindi at 13 percent, Faisalabad at 4 percent and Multan at 3 percent.
What Is Driving the Surge
The PSX record new investors inflow is the payoff of a sustained regulatory push to make investing simple and digital. In 2026 the SECP introduced a unified digital investor onboarding framework that standardises requirements across brokers, removes repetitive verification and enables API based digital onboarding, including instant issuance of investor identification numbers. Under the new system, Sahulat Accounts are processed within one working day and normal accounts within two.
The Sahulat Account, a simplified stock market account opened with just a CNIC, has been central to the growth. The SECP raised its investment limit from Rs 1 million to Rs 3 million, allowed investors to open Sahulat Accounts with multiple brokers, introduced IBAN based verification and launched Minor Trading Accounts so that those below 18 can invest through guardians. The SECP chairman has set a target of growing the investor base to 2.5 million accounts, and technology driven solutions, including a mobile application for digital onboarding and a broker referral programme, are part of that plan.
What the PSX Record New Investors Figure Means for Pakistan
The PSX record new investors announcement confirms that Pakistan’s capital market is broadening in a way that goes beyond the index. More investors, broader participation and deeper capital markets mean that the gains of the market are being shared more widely than ever before.
The timing matters for the wider economy too. The investor surge reflects the same momentum seen across Pakistan’s economic story, from record Eurobond demand and foreign reserves to IT exports to the UAE jumping 42 percent and Pakistan’s place among the world’s top five digital services suppliers. For a nation where stock market participation has long been the preserve of the urban elite, the arrival of a young, digitally native investor class could reshape the financial landscape for years to come.
