A new era of artificial intelligence research began in Lahore this week as the Human-Centered AI Lab Punjab University was officially inaugurated on October 7, 2026. Set up at the Faculty of Computing and Information Technology (PUFCIT), the laboratory has been established through a collaboration between Punjab University, the Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TIKA), and Turkiye’s Ministry of Culture and Tourism, marking another milestone in the growing academic partnership between Pakistan and Turkiye.
The inauguration ceremony brought together senior officials from both countries, reflecting the importance both sides attach to the Human-Centered AI Lab Punjab University. TIKA Vice President Ali Erjan formally inaugurated the laboratory, joined by Turkish Consul General Mehmet Eymen Simsek, Punjab University Pro Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Mahmood Saleem, Dean FCIT Prof Dr Shahzad Sarwar, Dr Kamran Malik, and other faculty members.
The Inauguration Ceremony
The event at PUFCIT featured a briefing on the laboratory’s establishment, its planned activities, and its future research agenda. The ceremony concluded with commemorative gifts for the Turkish delegation, followed by a group photograph.
Addressing the gathering, TIKA Vice President Ali Erjan said the agency will further strengthen its cooperation with educational institutions in Pakistan and play its full role in supporting their development and improvement. He noted that while artificial intelligence is advancing at a remarkable pace with considerable potential in education, health, research, and public services, this rapid progress makes it even more important to ask what these technologies are for, whom they serve, and how they affect people’s lives. That vision, he said, lies at the heart of the new laboratory: a space where students and researchers develop advanced technical skills while also critically examining the human and societal implications of the systems they create.
The Turkish Consul General added that TIKA is financially supporting several projects at educational institutions across Pakistan, helping promote educational cooperation and advancing the mutual interests of the two countries. The new AI laboratory at Punjab University is among the most significant of these recent collaborations.
The Turkiye Partnership Behind the Human-Centered AI Lab Punjab University
Alongside the laboratory’s launch, Punjab University deepened its ties with Turkiye’s academic sector through a separate research agreement with Yildiz Technical University. Under the agreement, the two universities will collaborate on joint research projects in human-centered artificial intelligence, facilitate exchanges of faculty members and student delegations, and work together on postgraduate programs.
Yildiz Technical University will share research resources and academic materials with Punjab University and support PU faculty teaching AI courses, helping them strengthen their knowledge and teaching skills. The two institutions also plan to jointly develop courses and teaching programs in artificial intelligence, and reports indicate ambitious targets: more than ten joint research papers over the next five years, at least five jointly funded external research projects, and more than twenty MPhil and PhD research papers. Yildiz has also confirmed it will support the development of the Human-Centered AI Lab Punjab University curriculum.
What the Human-Centered AI Lab Punjab University Will Do
The Human-Centered AI Lab Punjab University is equipped with modern computing and server facilities designed to support serious AI research. It will enable researchers, faculty members, and students from both Pakistan and Turkiye to undertake collaborative research and academic activities under one roof.
The laboratory’s distinctive focus is on human-centered artificial intelligence, an approach that places people at the center of AI development. Rather than pursuing technology for its own sake, researchers at the lab will explore how AI systems can be designed to serve human needs, respect societal values, and improve everyday life. This philosophy reflects a growing global conversation about responsible AI, and it positions Punjab University among the institutions working to ensure the AI revolution remains grounded in human welfare.
Why the Human-Centered AI Lab Punjab University Matters for Pakistan
The Human-Centered AI Lab Punjab University adds to a series of positive developments for Pakistan’s technology sector. One of the country’s largest and oldest public universities, founded in 1882, is now home to a dedicated facility for AI research backed by an international partner, giving Pakistani students and researchers access to modern infrastructure and cross-border collaboration opportunities that would be difficult to build alone.
For students at PUFCIT, the lab opens doors to joint research projects, faculty mentoring from Yildiz Technical University, and exposure to international academic standards. For Pakistan’s wider technology ecosystem, it strengthens the country’s position in a field that is reshaping every industry. This momentum aligns with other bright spots in the sector, including the country’s rising profile as a provider of digital services, recently highlighted in World Bank-linked rankings (Pakistan ranks among the top five digital services providers), and the growing startup scene, such as World Context’s robotics hackathon at UC Berkeley.

Pakistan and Turkiye share a long history of cooperation in education, culture, and development. The Human-Centered AI Lab Punjab University is the latest chapter in that friendship, and it signals that both countries see artificial intelligence not just as a technological race, but as a shared responsibility to build systems that serve people. As the laboratory begins its work, students and researchers in Lahore will have a new platform to contribute to that goal, and to put Pakistan’s name on the map in the world of human-centered AI, alongside growing educational opportunities such as the British Council’s expanded scholarships for Pakistani students.
