Telenor Pakistan has done it again. The operator, a brand of Pak Telecom Mobile Limited (PTML), secured the No. 1 position in cybersecurity excellence for the third consecutive year at the Telecom Cyber Security Awards 2026, hosted by the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) in Islamabad. The hat-trick confirms Telenor Pakistan as the benchmark for protecting telecom data and networks in a country where almost every financial transaction now begins on a mobile phone.

Three years at the top of the Telecom Cyber Security Awards 2026

The Federal Minister for IT and Telecommunication, Shaza Fatima Khawaja, presented the award to PTML Chief Technology Officer Awais Vohra and Chief Corporate Affairs Officer Shan Haq, at a ceremony attended by the PTA Chairman, senior government officials and leaders from across the telecom and technology industries. Telenor Pakistan first took the top honour at the awards in 2024, repeated it in 2025, and has now completed three straight years at number one. Its chief information security officer, Usman Ahmed, is recognised in the industry for building the compliance programme behind the run: he is described as the only CISO in Pakistan’s telecom sector to win the PTA awards back to back.

Commenting on the 2026 result, Awais Vohra said the company was thrilled to secure the top position for the third consecutive year, in recognition of its robust security standards, compliance with regulatory requirements, and efforts to protect critical telecom data and infrastructure. He added that cybersecurity is fundamental to building trust in a hyper-connected society.

How the winners are judged

Unlike popularity contests, the Telecom Cyber Security Awards 2026 follow an audit. The PTA assesses operators against its Critical Telecom Data and Infrastructure Security Regulations (CTDISR), the rulebook that sets how Pakistan’s essential telecom infrastructure must be protected from cyber threats. The process includes a detailed audit and a revalidation exercise, and Telenor Pakistan recorded one of the highest compliance scores in the industry. In other words, the ranking is earned in server rooms and security operations centres, not in marketing departments.

The awards sit inside a wider national effort. The PTA works under Pakistan’s Cyber Security Policy 2021 and its Cyber Security Strategy 2023 to 2028, running regular audits, a national telecom CERT function and sector-wide awareness programmes. Pakistan’s broader progress has also been recognised internationally: the country was placed in the top Tier 1 category of the International Telecommunication Union’s Global Cybersecurity Index in 2024, alongside the world’s leading states for digital security.

Security work that continues between audits

Compliance of this kind is built in ordinary weeks, not in the days before an inspection. In practice, CTDISR compliance means security operations centres watching networks around the clock, strict controls on who can access critical systems, tested incident response plans, and protection for the subscriber data that operators are legally required to hold. This month, weeks before the awards, Ufone and Telenor Pakistan joined the PTA to host an executive workshop on Zero Trust security, the model that assumes no user or device is trusted by default, for leaders from across the industry at their headquarters in Islamabad. A regulator that runs the audit, and operators who then teach each other what passed it, is the kind of ecosystem the awards are designed to encourage.

Why this matters beyond the trophy shelf

Telecom networks carry Pakistan’s mobile banking, digital wallets, government services and emergency communications. A serious breach at a major operator would not be an IT problem; it would be a national one. Consistent, independently audited compliance is what keeps that risk down, and a three year run at the top suggests a system that survives staff changes and new threats, rather than a one-off effort before an inspection.

The win also lands during a period of change for the company: Telenor Group completed the sale of Telenor Pakistan to PTCL, and the brand now operates under Pak Telecom Mobile Limited alongside Ufone, with the two operators already cooperating with the PTA on industry security workshops. For readers following Pakistan’s digital build-out, from the China-Pakistan Information Corridor to the country’s first global PUBG Mobile event in Lahore, reported in Pakistan Hosts First Global PUBG Mobile Event, the message of the Telecom Cyber Security Awards 2026 is that the foundations are being audited as seriously as the storefront is being celebrated.
